the Legacy Trail stretch through town and the grounds of Nokomis Community Park

The Legacy Trail runs through Nokomis on its way between Venice and downtown Sarasota, crossing Shakett Creek near Dona Bay on a bridge. A bridge is a great early challenge for a puppy: the sound and feel change underfoot, and the open sides can look odd. Walk across slowly, pause in the middle for a treat and turn back before your pup gets worried.

Nokomis Community Park connects straight to the trail and has gopher tortoise habitat on its grounds. Gopher tortoises are a protected species, and their burrows are tempting for a nosy puppy to dig into. Keep your pup on a short leash near any sandy burrow mouth and reward a leave-it. The same skill helps with the rabbits, foxes and snakes people report along the trail.

Nokomis Beach and the Casey Key shoreline are part of the Sarasota County coast, where dogs are not allowed on the sand. Owners who want their puppy to see the Gulf usually drive south to the dog beach at Brohard Paw Park in Venice, once their vet is comfortable with the exposure. Before then, let your puppy hear surf and wind from a parked car or a carried walk along the street.

Nokomis is a smaller, older community along US 41, with many single-story homes and yards. Fenced yards help potty training but tempt puppies to dig and eat whatever falls from the trees. A starter puppy package of a few private lessons is often priced around $150 to $350 as a general estimate, depending on the trainer and what is included.
