Brohard Paw Park on Harbor Drive South has a fenced play yard that opens onto a stretch of sand where dogs may go off leash, and it is open from 7 a.m. to dusk. It is the one place in the county where a dog can splash in the Gulf. For a puppy, the first visits should be short: watch from the boardwalk, try the shallow edge on a long line and rinse off with the outdoor showers before the ride home.
Red tide blooms appear along this coast in some years. If your puppy swims in a bloom, rinse the coat right away so it does not lick the toxin off, and keep it away from dead fish and beach foam. If you notice coughing, vomiting or wobbliness afterward, call a vet. Venice is also the self-named Shark Tooth Capital of the World, and puppies love to mouth small beach finds, so practice a trade-for-a-treat game before beach day.
The Venetian Waterway Park runs along both sides of the Intracoastal Waterway and links to the Legacy Trail at the historic Venice Train Depot. The trail lists dog water and clean-up stations, which makes it a natural route for leash manners. Woodmere Paw Park, a 2.5-acre county park off Jacaranda Boulevard, is an option once your pup turns 4 months old.
Venice Island is reached by bridges over the Intracoastal, and the city sat close to the worst winds and surge when Hurricane Milton came ashore to the north in 2024. Crate comfort and calm car rides belong on every Venice puppy plan. Private lessons in this part of the county commonly run about $75 to $150 each as a general estimate, and prices vary by trainer.

Good questions
Before you begin.
Can my puppy go to the Venice dog beach at Brohard Paw Park?
Yes, once your vet is comfortable with the exposure. Paw park rules call for dogs to be at least 4 months old with current vaccinations, and the park is open from 7 a.m. to dusk.
What should I know about red tide and my puppy?
Avoid dead fish and sea foam, rinse your puppy after any swim and call a vet if coughing, vomiting or wobbliness follows.
Where can I practice puppy leash walking in Venice?
The Venetian Waterway Park trail is a good choice, with dog water and clean-up stations along the way. Go early before the pavement warms.
